November 2003

Meeting

Saturday-December 13th

Gulf Guarantee Annex Building

I-55 South Service Road next to I-Hop

From the Driver's Seat- Well, It's hard to believe that Thanksgiving is almost here. Boy, this year is really flying by!!!! We only counted 22 at our election meeting last week, but we got a great bunch of officers and board members nominated for the upcomming year. We have another great year ahead of us with a great membership. We voted on 3 new members at the meeting, including Algie's son-in-law, Ken Hackman who just came with him for the ride. He just pitched in and really got involved & we wouldn't let him leave until he joined. Yea, Ken, you really have some good ideas for the club. We now have 154 family memberships, that's a lot of folks that love these cars and the number of people that have old antique cars that aren't involved in a club. We have a lot of people that we need to reach out to, and get them involved in our "wonderful" club. We are looking forward to our Christmas parade at Miss. State Hospital at Whitfield. This is such a worthwhile event and it makes alot of patients happy to see our "ole cars". This gives our club a great exsposure too! Call me if you can participate, 825-3344. I am looking forward to our Christmas Party too. You will be very sorry if you miss the event! We are having "ELVIS PRESLEY" back again this year by popular demand. We need these old folks rejuvenated. I hope everyone has a wonderful Thanksgiving.
Now, let's roll while having fun!

Pat Clark, President

PAT’S CORNER??????

On The Road: We recently traveled to New Albany area up around Tupelo. We traveled through Oxford and returned down HWY 15. On our path were many antique shops and points of interest. There were several old vehicle graveyards. Miss Jane filled up on the trinkets from the antique shops, and I reviewed the possibilities of all of the ramifications of purchasing a Volkswagen Thing. I realized how much rustier it would get before I even pulled the tarp off of it, the transportation costs, and lack of storage places to keep it, and decided to let someone else take it. It rests at or near the intersection of 315 & 15 near Ecru, MS. I can take you back up that way, by phone, if you are interested. Philadelphia Trip

More Mileage for your tank? (Courtesy of State Farm Insurance)
Give your car a full tune-up at the interval specified by the manufacturer. Most tune-up’s now only require plugs, a cap, and rotor; everything else is electronic
Avoid letting your vehicle idle when making stops. It costs less to restart in most instances.
Premium gas costs about 17 cents more per-gallon. If you can adjust your timing to run on unleaded gas, you will be money ahead at the pump. Thanks for the tip, Curtis. Somehow I always knew that, but never tried it until now L It works-no more “ping”
Slow Down! I have realized a savings of about 5-7 MPG by traveling at 55 MPH, even in the Mustang. Fast starts and fast stops use more fuel, tires and brakes. My drivers ed person taught me to feather the gas, and feather the brakes. That advice still holds true from 1963
Keeping your tires inflated to the manufacturers specifications will allow your vehicle to roll better. You will realize better gas mileage, better and longer tire wear. The air pressure is stated on most door jambs (front & rear PSI). My father taught me to keep the pressure at or below the “Maximum” pressure as stated on the tire. Unfortunately, my tires would bald in the middle. I thought the gauge was off. Maximum means “don’t put any more in there!”

The Business Meeting was held at The Masonic Lodge, Ag Museum, as scheduled. The board and members present nominated the following officers for the election to be held at the Christmas celebration on 12/13.
Position Nominated
President Jerry Hardin
Vice President Joe Lee
Secretary Margie Phelps
Treasurer Marian Bardwell
Board Director Glen Jent, Bill Phelps, John Emory
Newsletter Jeff & Jane Kelly

If you have additional nominations, please get the information to the current Board Members for consideration before the election. The election will be held at the Christmas Meeting on 12/15.
NEW MEMBER APPLICATIONS
3 new members were approved. Tony Watson has a 66, 70, & 72 Olds Cutlass 442. He sent a membership application that he found on our website. Ken Hackman, vehicles??, was recruited by Algie Broome. James Marcallis (SP?) a 68 Mercury Montiego. He resides in Macomb, MS and was recruited by new member James Brooks. The total Membership now includes 153 members.

An orientation package is being developed. It will contain some basic knowledge about our club, and the activities and camaraderie it represents. It will describe the processes in judging the cars at the Fair Show and the outings we have in and around the area. If you have information that you think should be in the Orientation Package, or the newsletter, please give it to a board member, or directly to Jeff Kelly, 898 1553.

There has been a “tip jar” placed at the munchies bar predominantly at the snack table for our club meetings. It was initiated for donations toward the munchies that we have before, during & after the business meeting. Up to now, the Phelps have been providing the munchies, coffee, and such. They choose to pass the baton to a considerate soul. Please consider assuming the position. Contact Marge or Bill Phelps at 898 1061 to cover the opening. The members are going to bring a snack or desert from now on. What it will boil down to is a coffee pot.

Old Trophies can be donated to an organization called YMCA. You can call Senior Vice President of Operations, Don Pool, at 948 0818. Jerry Hardin reinforced the need at the YMCA, at this time.

SICK CALL:
A note to us from Bob and Mrs. Jackman, they have sent a card of thanks regarding our recognition of their recent loss. A contribution was made at their request to the Animal Rescue League.
Peggy Dixon has lost her mother, Nezzie Sheppard, after a long time illness. She passed away on 11/5. The club has sent a plant.
Janet Sherer and David have our prayers still needed. I was privileged to meet her at the Fair. Thanks for helping, Janet.
Glen Jent is recuperating from eye surgery, and ain’t laffin. He will be on his stomach for a while and does not like it at all! Glen has done a great job as the Newsletter Editor. Thanks, Glen-Get well soon.
Ellen Riddle is bedridden still about 85%, but is at home now. Harris Fitzpatrick 82, is recuperating too, from the accident they had a while ago. They were shopping in Pearl. Ellen plans to attend the Christmas Meeting. We all hope to see you there.
For all of our members in need: May God Bless, and be with them and their family during this time of bereavement or need. Please contact John Emory, our Club Chaplin, if you need support - 956 0250, or any Board Member.

THE WEBSITE: www.ACVM.org is bringing in new member inquiries. Go there on your computer service, and give us ideas on how to improve the quality of this website, and anything we can do to improve the well being of the AVCM. We intend to put your picture of your vehicle there, eventually. Trouble right now is your permission. You joined the AVCM and we choose to respect your privacy. If you put information on the Web, anyone can contact you. We elect to not share any information with the Webmaster to be placed on the website without your permission.

The Treasurers Report was very good. We will be able to present a check to the Blair Batson Home for $2171.34. We have done well with our car mat project, and have seen a profit. They are paid for now, but we must continue to sell the rest. After paying for the Fair Trophies this year, we should realize a slight loss on the Fair over all expense. A check for $281, which is our portion off the trophy cost, will be presented to Dr Spell as agreed next Tuesday, pending confirmation of appointment. Pat Clark will present the Blair Batson Check some time during the first week in December. Contact her if you want to go along, 825 3344. Wayne Hilliard is our treasurer. Thank you, Wayne, for the good job you have done. Contact him if there is a need. 856 0861.

Please send in your dues. The dues cover a period from 1/1/04-12/31/04. Most folks will present their dues at the Fair, or at the Christmas Meeting. I don’t think there are any electronic features to our collection system J
Please send your dues in as soon as you can. We need the money to support our functions - like this newsletter

The Newsletter: For those of you who have an email address, we would be glad to send you a copy of the newsletter to that email address. We will be putting the newsletter together for next month in a week or two, may be tomorrow. Please send your address change, comments, or articles of interest to any Board Member or Jeff Kelly MSgater@bellsouth.net or call 898 1553, or you can mail to the AVCM, attn: Jeff Kelly. My address is 205 Timberline Drive, Madison, MS 39110. Newsletters were sent to Lopers, and Riddles. Sorry you missed them.
It is reported that George Raworth initiated our sponsor program. Our sponsors should be recognized, and we should use their services or at least tell them “Thank You” as often as we can. This money supports our operating costs, such as this newsletter. Our thanks to Pat for reminding us, and an “atta-boy” to George for his efforts and participation. If you know of someone who has products or services that will be used by our readers, please let them know we will honor their contribution and they should contact us for information.
“I use Car Quest to get my Mustang parts. I drive 2 Fords. One was bought at Gray Daniels. I got a roll of New Mississippi Quarters from Bank Plus, once, and will go to Yazoo Motors, and get the best offer on a new Chevy 1500 when I get ready to trade the Gray Daniels F-150”. Miss Jane needs some rocks; look out Dixon Sand & Gravel! – Members Statement.
Jerry Hardin has reported that our club has been in the Jackson area since 1971. Would anyone care to give me some stories about the club? Or the members?
Past Events:
I have no reports about the coast cruise from any club members. It is reported by the MSRA, Jack, that Jimmy Buffet came and all the folks came and went happily. The advise for next year is to avoid the road on the week end. The reservations have been made already for those who enjoyed it so much. I have an excellent write-up about their experience and will share it with anyone who wants to review it. It will be held next year on 10/3-10 according to the source that I have. It is reported that the 25-year-old rule will go into effect for the 2004 Cruise year. The ladies as well had a shopping victory. J
10/18 Cruising For Kids, Jackson, as reported by the MSRA, reported that there was a great turnout. 151 cars raised $10k for the children at Blair Batson. Sammie and Kim were credited for the organization of it, and deserve a great deal of credit for the donations. The Hooters girls played a part and the music was excellent.
10/24 Bare Bones was a success. There was a show at the outlet mall there. Rain fell but did not detour the folks who went.
11/1 Weekend- the MSRA ended up in Florence at the Sonic. They covered a large run that included Wynndale, Mendenhall, Crystal Springs, and about 100 vehicles came to Sonic.
11/9-10 The MSRA folks enjoyed the Arkansas run. They won the club participation award.
Up Coming Activities:
Next year, it will be the same. Some consideration has been made for the duplicate activities during the days of “The Fair” and “Cruising The Coast”. Since our cars are tied up at the Fair from start to finish, and the Coast Cruise is some of the days, our members who have 2 vehicles are leaving one in the Trade Mart and drive the other to the Coast. An alternate activity is to go to Hattiesburg, turn south, and pull in to a station and watch the folks drive by. Our friends in the Hattiesburg area told us that it was a constant parade back and forth, up and down highway 49. I think lots of folks come down from up North. Those of you, who make the trip, please encourage those who pass by here from up there to stop by the Trade Mart, and say “Howdy!” - on the way down, or back. J
The Christmas Parade at Whitfield is being organized now. It will be at 9am on 12/5. Please contact SW Bardwell at 825 4093. We will need about 3 bags of candy per entrant, and will be at no cost to you, most likely. The candy should be wrapped. Not to exclude any, it should be on the order of Mints, or tootsie rolls quality-same like and kind. You will parade in and around the grounds with the other exhibits in the parade such as floats. The parade is about 1-1/2 miles long, and is rerouted from last years route due to construction. An administrator has assured me that the vehicles we bring were a major factor in determining the route so that the dust and debris will be contained in the construction area, and not on the parade route. A special note, please consider taking over the staging of this activity. SW Bardwell has decided to pass the baton. Please observe this activity, and consider the possibility of you doing it this year. You can pass the baton next year. Most successful organizations have the happiest campers if they share the load. Our thanks to “KW” for taking care of it this year.
Another Note: Wal Mart has, in the past, donated candy to this activity, to us - $25. The procedure is pretty simple. You have to approach the manager of the Wal Mart, and then tell him the plot. They will contribute money as a donation to the candy that you buy there for the project, toward the candy. George! Wouldn’t this be a good opportunity to get Wal Mart as a sponsor? How about one of you? I buy lots of car accessories there! – Oil? - let me see….what else?
The Christmas Party, and meeting on 12/13 – Please bring a covered dish and a gift for someone that you like. Please label your gift as “M” or “F” or “U”. At the meeting we determined the “U” to mean unisex. I do not think that this is politically correct. I wish to suggest “U “is for either sex J Please limit your gift expense to $5 for the exchange. It will be at the Guarantee Building at 6:30 pm. DIRECTIONS: it is located on I-55 South-Service Road a little north of Northside Drive. You have to exit at Briarwood, Atkins/Beasley exit if you are coming from the north. A long way down, just before Northside Drive, is the Guarantee Building. If you are coming from the south, you would exit at Northside Drive Exit, and stay on the north bound service road to the next cross over past Northside Drive. Take the crossover, and head south to the Guarantee building. It will be dark, then. Why not do a “drive-by” in the daytime? As you are passing that area, and traveling I-55, the I Hop (International House of Pancakes) is next door. Elvis may be in the building. I wouldn’t miss it!
The Jackson Convention and Visitors Bureau has asked the club to help them with a July 4th weekend extravaganza that they are planning for 2004. Pat told them if it was to be a weekend event that they would have to plan for inside if they needed antique vehicles. This is only in the planning stages so we will keep you posted. - Marge Phelps

Note: Melba Williams has taken the baton and will organize the Let’s Eat Out activities. SW Bardwell has done a great job, and Melba has a tough act to follow. She has requested one month to have us all go to Martha’s Kitchen, in Mount Olive. The meals there range from $11-12. Melba will select a place for January and relay it to us in the near future. If you have a favorite place, please give Melba a call. 922 6801.
Thanks to our other folks who like the vehicles, you all may want to “Piggy Back” some of their activities. Please review the activities considered by the MISSISSIPPI STREET ROD ASSOCIATION. They are “doin’ what we do best: eatin’ laughin’ and playin’ cars”.
