AVCM MS State Fair Car Show-- October2nd-12th, 2002

I would like to begin my report on the Fair Show with some background information that you may not know.. About two months before the Fair I received a call that we would not be able to have the trade Mart Building for our car show without paying for our space and trophies. In the past, the State has been our sponsor; providing the space, trophies and other benefits.
Mike Brinkley (Director of Fairgrounds) said that the State had no money to subsidize the Fair and that they had to make all expenses on their own. They were looking for paying vendors. We made an appointment with Lester Spell (Commissioner of Agriculture) and five AVCM officers and members met with him. He agreed with us that it was too late in the year to be telling us that we had no space for the year. He did explain the financail problem the Fair was having. We agreed to work with them. They didn't realize the attendance we draw to the Fair to see our cars. Mr. Spell said they would try having the show again this year(2002) and reevaluate for next year.
You talk about PRESSURE! We worked with Mike Brinkley's and Lester Spell's offices concerning the trophies. We took trophy bids andused a new trophy vendor this year. I enjoyed working with them and was able to redo some and eliminate others and actually was able to get nicer and larger "Best of Show" trophies. I was very proud of the trophies and recieved several positive comments concerning them.
Algie Broome hooked up a counter of people comming into the Trade Mart Showroom. It was not accurate but it recorded very impressive numbers. It only counted one when several people walked in together and did not work if someone stood infront of it. Additionally, there were times when it would malfunction and we would have to adjust it.
Initially, it looked like we might not get enough quality cars to exhibit. I got on the phone and call people fir days to get a good vehicle turn out. All in all, I think we had one of our best State Fair Car Shows. We broke our record with 95 vehicles. We had twelve new members join AVCM during the Fair---And some went right to work like Windell Dickerson and Tim Peets. Thank you guys. We made $683 on sale of the car mats bringing the total to $1333. Additionally, we made $977 on the robotics mower. Thanks to Chuck Clark, it was a big success. The winner of the mower was a Mr. Anesworth from Jackson. We had a midway vendor who bought tickets everyday; totaling over $200. He came by later wanting his booby prize.
We had some new and improve equipment this year courtesy of Curtis Clark. He desighned and made the Club a bigger and better bulletin board and ticket spinner. Thank you Curtis. We had a new trailer for the Fair this year thanks to Jack Lewis for the great find and buy. We now have custom desighned shelves and storage spaces for the trailer thanks to Bernard Harrigill. Bernard worked for days by himself on customizing the trailer for our specific needs. Bernard also worked on our old red trailer and even painted it the pretty red color. We were to sell the old trailer at the Fair but as a token of the Club's appreciation, we voted to donate it to Bernard. Thank you Bernard for all you do for the Club.
We have the new sponsors; CarQuest, BankPlus, and Gray Daneils Ford. thank you guys!
There are so many people who helped the Show a success. There was a lot of involvement parking cars, working the desk, exiting cars, cleaning up, guarding cars, selling tickets, mats, roppiong off carsand judging just name a few. There is a lot done befre the Show as well. Some things people never see or know about. Joe Lee, thank you for the days you spent calling people you know asking them to bring their cars and for the leads and names you gave me to call. I thank you for all the effort you made cleaning your cars and bringing them for the twelve days.
I met with Mike Brinkley after the Fair and he was very impressed with ou r show. This was the first time to attend. I showed him our attendance log that tallied 46,007. I explained that the number needed at least doubled for accurate estimate. He was usrprised that the number of attendees was that high and assured me that we would have our space fot the car show next year. I will be following up on this with Lester Spell.
By working together we can say, "this was the best show ever"!!
Pat Clark, Vice President
