March 2002

NEXT MEETING

Sunday Afternoon-March 24, 2002

Cedar Grove - Vicksburg

Celebrating Thirty One Years

From the Driver's Seat-

Looks like spring is just around the corner. I’m looking forward to the good cruisin’ weather ahead and the good times for our membership to get together and show our beautiful cars and trucks. Hopefully, most of us will be able to attend the spring and summer activities planned by Pat Clark.
For those who missed the February meeting as I did (flu), I was told it was spirited and lively; but held true to our Club’s democratic process on issues brought before the Club—the majority rules!!
Don’t forget the Ferrari Club Show in Vicksburg on March 24th. I understand we have several signed up for it. Make plans for our April tour to Louisville and meeting on the 20th. Maybe we can have the largest turnout ever for this exciting event.
Also, plan to participate in the Bond Home activities and meeting scheduled for May 19th. This is one of my favorite events our Club sponsors.
First Baptist Church in Madison is having a car show on May 11th. Hopefully, many of our Club members will participate. Our Board and membership wish them the best in their First Annual Shine & Show.
Serving you,

Sonny Scott, President

YOUR HELP NEEDED

Those of you who attended our February Meeting know that Senators Jeff Bingaman and Tom Daschle are sponsoring Senate bill S. 1766, Energy Policy Act of 2002. Section 803 of the bill is directed at providing federal funds to assist states in retiring (crushing) fuel-inefficient motor vehicles. Our antique cars are considered fuel-inefficient. If this bill passes, hobbyists nationwide will no longer have viable parts cars for potential restoration projects. The State of New Jersey already has a law in effect that forces automotive hobbyists to give up ownership of their cars so they can be crushed if they do not meet specific standards.

Bob Jackman has drafted letters to send to Senators Trent Lott, Thad Cochran, Jeff Bingaman, and Tom Daschle. We will have petitions to each senator for members to sign at the Cedar Grove event on March 24th. For those of you who cannot be there, we encourage you to sign the enclosed petition for each senator and return it to Bob and Lori Jackman, 2206 Scenic Drive, Brandon, MS 39047. We will send the separate petitions to each senator. Please feel free to copy the petition forms for your spouse or others who share our concerns to sign. We need as many signatures as possible. If you have questions about the legislation or if you want to send your own letter, we will be glad to give you additional information. Our phone number is 919-0291 and e-mail address is robertjackman @msn.com. Lori Jackman An Automotive Essay for Men
It has been said that the most difficult task of a woman’s life is to give up her kitchen. For me, it’s giving up an automobile.
Man is like an automobile. As it gets older, the differential starts slipping, and the u-joints get worn, causing the drive shaft to go bad. The transmission won’t go into high gear and sometimes has difficulty getting out of low. The cylinders get worn and lose compression, making it hard to climb the slightest incline. When it is climbing, the tappets clatter and ping to the point where one wonders if the old bus will make it to the top.
The carburetor gets fouled with pollutants and other matter, making it hard to get started in the morning
It is hard to keep the radiator filled because of the leaking hose. The thermostat goes out, making it difficult to reach operating temperature. The headlights grow dim and the horn gets weaker. The memory chip drops a few bytes and the battery needs constant recharging.
But if the body looks good with no bangs, dents or chipping paint, we can keep it washed and polished, giving the impression that it can compete with the newer models and make one more trip down the primrose lane before the head gasket blows.
Gentlemen, start your engines!
Pat Clark
