From the Driver's Seat- At our January meeting the club approved two new members, Mr. Joe Watson of Brandon and Mr. Owen B. Evans of Jackson. I would like to welcome them to our club and invite them to all our regular club meetings each month. At the meeting the Board presented to the club our activities through December 2004. Also, at the meeting we discussed our tour for March. For the past two years we have attended Cedar Grove in Vicksburg as our March Tour. During the discussion we had several members to suggest something different for our tour this year, so we decided on an over-night stay and cruise up the Natchez Trace to Tupelo, March 20 - 21. I have contacted three hotels in the Tupelo area and they can accommodate us as a tour. The rates for the Holiday Express located on N. Gloster St. are $71.40 per night for two persons. The Toll-Free number is 800 465-4329. The Ramada Limited located one mile out of town is $60.00 per night for two persons or, with AAA and Sam's Club the rate is $47.00 plus tax and the Toll Free number is 1 800 272-6232. The Comfort Inn located on N. Gloster St. is $54.00 plus tax for two persons. Toll-Free number is 1 800 544-4444. You will be responsible for making or canceling your reservations. So, get your vehicle ready and let's cruise up the Trace for a fun weekend. CLUB DUES; So far, only 64 members have renewed their dues for the year 2004 and most of them paid at the State Fair in October. Your dues are due at the State Fair each year for the following year. For the past two years we did not send out notices in January as we have in the past. I have directed the Treasurer to cut off mail outs after the March bulletin is mailed out. PLEASE, if you have overlooked paying your dues, I ask you to do so before April first because the club needs you. THE WEBSITE: www.ACVM.org is bringing in new member inquiries. Go there on your computer service and give us ideas on how to improve the quality of this website, and anything we can do to improve the well being of the AVCM. We intend to put your picture of your vehicle there, eventually. Bobby McClellan reported that we have had 21,355 hits on our web-page as of 11/29/03. UPCOMMING EVENTS 2/14 Dixie National Rodeo Parade, Jackson, MS. Fair starts at 10am. Be there at or about 8:30 am to line up. The cars will line up on Jefferson Street across from the Fairgrounds and Lester Spell’s office. Contact Joe Lee or Jerry Hardin for more information. Parade starts at 10 am. 2/15 Membership meeting at Gulf Guarantee Annex, 2:30 pm; DIRECTIONS: it is located on the I-55 South Service Road a little north of Northside Drive. You have to exit at Briarwood, Atkins/Beasley exit if you are coming from the north. A long way down, just before Northside Drive, is the Gulf Guarantee “gg” Annex Building. The Annex has a “gg” on it and is attached to the right of the main Gulf Guarantee Building. If you were coming from the south, you would exit at Northside Drive Exit, and stay on the northbound service road to the next cross over past Northside Drive. Take the crossover, and head south to the Gulf Guarantee Annex Building. It will be dark, then. Why not do a “drive-by” in the daytime? When you are passing that area of I-55 and Northside Drive, the I Hop (International House of Pancakes) is next door to Gulf Guarantee Building. 2/21 February Dining Experience: 21 Feb we will be seated at Cock of the Walk, in Ridgeland at 5:30 pm. We have a room reserved. Please RSVP Melba at 992 6801 so the room size and number of seats can be determined. We can order family style Fish or Chicken. Directions: from I-55 North bound, exit on the trace, and proceed to the second Ridgeland exit, Old Canton Road, and turn right on Old Canton Road to Rice Road. Turn left there, and proceed to Madison Landing, and turn right. Cock of the Walk is to the left of the stop sign. Good Food! Best Company. See you there :) Please RSVP to Melba at 992 6801. 3/20-21 AVCM March Tour to Tupelo. We will finalize the plans for this activity at the FEB 15th membership meeting. See you there. On The Road1/10/04 NSRA, MSRA General Meeting I attended the NSRA (National Street Rod Association) annual get together sponsored by the MS Street Rod Association (MSRA), and enjoyed the outing. (I think I got that right?) The plans for their organization in the central MS, and surrounding areas, were discussed and I got lots of information about hot roders’ in general. There were several representatives from clubs, magazines, and an excellent speaker, Jim Gilbert from U of MS who talked about Municipal, County, and State Parks & Recreation wanting and providing funding for our type of activities. He spoke about their willingness to work with our car clubs and promote joint functions using our efforts as a draw to their activities, like craft shows, swap meets, and many fundraisers. I came away with a positive opinion of them and was explained a couple of things by some co-participants. I first found it odd that they only consider bodies as the criteria for meets and judging events. Registration mostly is approved for “pre-49”, only, at their judging events. Politically incorrect, I first thought that something with a Mustang undercarriage and a Chevy V-8 in something “not” pre-55 was a counter diction to pre-49’, like, in a 48 Chrysler? I know the first Mustang came out in 64. Not sure, but I also think the first automatic transmission came out in 48 Cadillac’s??? According to the folks there that I visited with, most said that they have saved the car from the crusher. The outside is kept as original as possible, and the inside is made for comfort, feasibility, and speed. Another person suggested that the hot rods were made safely and for the purpose of “to be driven”. That pretty much sets the “Antiquers’ and the ‘Street Rodders’ apart. I am disappointed that many of our members feel that the hot rodders would never fit in our world. Since most hot rodders build something from an antique, and most antiquers try so hard to preserve and replace with original to maintain integrity, I am still caught up in the imperfect world and contra diction of our folks who re chrome parts, or buy aftermarket replacement parts. I still lean toward preservation and antiquity, but my vehicle is a driver, and not a show car. I’ll probably always have rock chips in the paint, and tar blotches behind the front wheels on the rocker panels, cause I would never put those little after-market rock guards in the wheel wells. Mine will stay original. Another comment I was impressed with was the ‘burn-outs’ that were ticketed in the Cruzin the Coast activity. I think there were 53 folks ticketed by the police department. We call it ‘peel-out’ where I came from. Anyway, considering that there were 5K cars there, 53 is about 1% ----Faaaarrrrrr fewer than if the ol’ bald one was there and had one of those cool sleds under his butt J I have a survey that Jim Gilbert commented on, and picked up several posters and flyers on the activities that the other clubs are having throughout the year. I will have them at the membership meeting to look at. They have my email and will contact us with updated material. A thank you to the MSRA for the invite to attend the meeting, and to the editor-Jack Brown-for his hospitality. –gater Membership: Welcome aboard to our new members. Dr Owen and Lynn Evans have a 66 Mustang. They live in Jackson. Joe and Penny Watson live in Brandon, and have a 70 Olds 442. In compliance with the President, the newsletter will not be sent to former members who have not yet renewed their membership for 2004 starting in March. I will place a red mailing label on your newsletter if there is no record of your payment for the 2004 membership. Please resolve this issue with Marian Bardwell if you have not paid your membership dues, or did, and got a red label. If you have decided not to stay a member, I would like to know why. Please call any board member if you have a complaint. Remember, if you attend the membership meeting you can talk to about half of the members, and all the board members. You would just slip a note to the president before the meeting stating that you have a complaint, and want to be placed on the agenda under “New Business”. An orientation package is being developed. It will contain some basic knowledge about our club, and the activities and camaraderie it represents. It will describe the processes in judging the cars at the Fair Show and the outings we have in and around the area. If you have information that you think should be in the Orientation Package or the newsletter, please give it to a board member, or directly to Jeff Kelly, MSgater@bellsouth.net 898 1553. SICK CALL: From The Chaplin: Mrs. Mabel W. Reeves, Mother of Bebe Richardson (Mrs. Bob) an AVCM family was buried on Saturday. She was 92. Let us all think of the family at this time of bereavement. Please contact John Emory, our Club Chaplin, 956 0250, if you have a report, or any Board Member. REMEMBERING JANET How blessed we are to have known our beloved Janet Sherer. For 25 long yrs she has never let her illness interfere with her love of family, friends, endeavors & her divine faith in Our Maker. How inspirational can one be having been so sick, yet manage such a contagious smile & warmth to every one she encountered? She was so grateful for her loving, caring friends. She appreciated the prayers she had from all who knew her. I've never seen such a loyal, loving husband as David who was always at her side; sick or well...such a very happy union. AVCM was truly blessed to have her as a member. She attended our 30th anniversary & told me "I just can’t wait to go out and see the cars"...such a zest for life! She & David have opened their home to our club with such hospitality. How can we ever forget the smile she had as she danced with Elvis last year? She was sick & short winded but told me "That was so much fun". We have suffered a great loss with Heaven's gain. Let us treasure our time we had with her. We who got to know and love Janet have a great loss. Let us offer our condolences to her wonderful family. Our daughters are friends & went to school together. Mary asked of me..."Momma how can Mrs. Sherer be sick when she's always so pretty and sweet? That was Janet! Rest in peace our dear friend. –Melba Williams The Newsletter: We will be putting the next newsletter together in a week or two, may be tomorrow. Please send your address change, comments, or articles of interest to any Board Member or Jeff Kelly MSgater@bellsouth.net or call 898 1553, or you can mail to the AVCM, attn: Jeff Kelly. My address is 205 Timberline Drive, Madison, MS 39110. Please send me your email address and I will include you in messages sent to the members throughout the month. I also report to the BOD as a member of the board. If there is something itching at you that you would like to change, about the AVCM, the Board or the membership can change it. Let me know, and I will relate your side of a story to the Board for consideration at the next Board Meeting. You can present any grievance to the members at the membership meeting too. Jerry Hardin has reported that our club has been in the Jackson area since 1971. Would anyone care to give me some stories about the club? Or the members? Cop says, "License and registration, please." Guy says, "What for?" Cop says, "You didn't come to a complete stop at the stop sign." Guy says, "I slowed down, and no one was coming." Cop says, "You still didn't come to a complete stop. License and registration, please." Guy says, "What's the difference?" Cop says, "The difference is, you have to come to a complete stop. License and registration, PLEASE!" Guy says, "If you can show me the difference between slow down and stop, I'll give you my license and registration." Cop says, "Exit your vehicle, sir." At this point, the cop takes out his nightstick and starts beating the hell out of the guy and says, "Do you want me to stop - or slow down?" To all our members: Please be polite to the policeman. He is our friend…Normally. The Stella Liebeck Award. Stella is the lady who poured hot coffee in her lap a while back at McDonalds, sued, and won because there was no label on the cup that told her the coffee was HOT! This year's runaway winner was Mr. Merv Grazinski of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. Mr. Grazinski purchased a new Winnebago motor home. On his trip home from an OU football game, having driven onto the freeway, he set the cruise control at 70 mph and calmly left the drivers seat to go into the back and make himself a cup of coffee. Not surprisingly, the RV left the freeway, crashed and overturned. Mr. Grazinski sued Winnebago for not advising him in the owner's manual that he could not actually do this. The jury awarded him $1,750,000 plus a new Winnebago Motor Home. The company actually changed their manuals on the basis of this suit just in case there were any other complete morons buying their recreational vehicles.
