The Great River Bend Watermelon Fest

Celebrating Thirty Years

From the Driver's Seat- "My how time flies". It's less than two months till the Mississippi State Fair in October. I have sent out letters of invitation to several out of town guests who own unusual automobiles requesting their attendance at the Fair Show. Some have confirmed their palnned participation. Our membership is growing and we should continue our promotion to share the love of old vehicles with others. So our meeting this month will continue our membership drive.

The annual Barbecue was a large success thanks to many members puting forth effort to serve in the Southern Style. The club will never be able to properly repay Bill Phelps for cooking the main dis so deliciously each year. That effort, Bill, is genuinely appreciated and enjoyed by all.

During that meeting we voted in five new members and reviewed the new web site access address which appears above. Sonny Scott offered the club the option of considering a raffle car, a 1971 Olds 88 owned by one person since new and obviously garaged most of it's life. The club voted to purchase the car, if after it was evaluated by several members, it was found acceptable. After the barbecue, four members inspected the car and found it worthy of the sale of the raffle tickets primarily at the Fair Show. My friend, S.W. Bardwell agreed to perform his magic under the hood within a few days. We greatly appreciate his eforts on this and the Thunderbird last year. The club voted also to share the new proceeds equally ith a charity to be selected at a later date.is right around the corner on Saturday July 28 under the Pavilion at the Ag Museum. As always we are grateful and fortunate to have Bill Phelps to do his magic at cooking fine barbecue. Please Call Melba Williams at 922-6801 to confirm attendance and advise what you are bringing to the barbecue.

Many of us are looking forward to the Watermelon feast next Sunday at River Bend on the Natchez Trace. Feel free to bring a guest or prospective member. Myrla Jent has arranged a very special occasion for us at Wellington's Restaurant on August 25. See the details in the events section on the web page.

In Memoriam - Chaplain John Emory call to let us know that another of our founding members, malcolm Akers, has passed away. Malcolm was abl to attend our anniversary meeting last Februrary and was still strongly supportive of our efforts. He will be missed.

Dawg Days Delirium - That's the best way to describe Bob Richardson's excitement last Saturday. He and John Emory drove Bob's magnificent Chrysler round trip to Ackerman (190 miles without incident) for the Dawg Days of Summer Festival and car show. And guess what--- Bob's car won "Best Original" through 1949. Man, was he thrilled? It couldn't happen to a nicer guy!

What? No Rebuttal from the ladies?

Does that mean you are satisfied to leave us guys alone with our toys? Maybe you agree with my wife who long ago accepted my philosophy that my hobby is no more exspensive than Golf or Photography and a whole lot less than whiskey and women-I'm too old to find out!
